The verb means to “inhale and exhale the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device”. The action and device can also be known as a vape.
The word has been chosen because of an explosion in its use, according to a blog post by Oxford Dictionaries.
Apparently, you are 30 times more likely to come across the word vape than you were two years ago, with usage doubling in the past year.
Vape started out as an abbreviation of vapour or vaporize and has spawned a collection of compound nouns, such as vape pen, vape fluid, etc.
Interestingly, the book worms found a reference to vaping back in 1983, although it wasn’t until 2009 that this sense of the word became mainstream.
